Three Exercises to Strengthen Mixed-Faith Marriages

All marriages offer challenges. A mixed-faith marriage offers unique but certainly not insurmountable challenges. Here are three helpful exercises tostrengthen any marriage but especially mixed-faith marriages.

1. ‘So Much in Common’ Exercise:

Write down all the things that are important to you. All the values, people, experiences, characteristics, principles, ideas that you consider to be important to a great life.

Ask your spouse to do the same.

Take a highlighter and highlight the things in common you both wrote on you lists.

Review this list when you get frustrated with your different points of view!

2. Ritual Evaluation Exercise:

As humans we engage in rituals and our relationships are full of rituals. The rituals may be simple like kissing goodbye or they may be more elaborate like a wedding. Rituals are often interwoven with religion and that can be problematic for mixed-faith couples. Make a list of the rituals you already have as a couple and place a check next to the ones that nurture your relationship.

Consider replacing the ones that do not nurture the relationship.

3. Difficult Communication Exercise:

The key to any successful marriage is effective communication. We often get overwhelmed and fail to effectively talk about many important issues in our relationship. Here is a simple process to have a difficult conversation:

1. Let go of the need to be right, or prove your point.

2. Start with “What are you thinking about (insert topic)?” Fully hear your partner. Note: You don’t get this luxury and that is OK.

3. Re-state the facts that you can both agree on.

4. Reduce the issue to one statement:

• You are making the facts mean:_______________________

• I am making these facts mean: _______________________

5. Now only talk about the solution. Do not discuss the problem, this is very tempting, only discuss possible solutions. You will be surprised how much easier it is to find solutions when discussing the problem is off the table.

It can be frustrating to be in a mixed faith marriage, but it doesn’t have to be. Many people find support like coaching to be critical when facing a mixed faith marriage.
